Nationals Make Roster Moves

Yesterday evening and into last night, the Nationals made a couple of roster moves. The first came during the late afternoon hours when pitcher Chien-Ming Wang was sent to the 15-day DL (hip)and closer Henry Rodriguez was activated. The second came late last night when catcher Sandy Leon was activated from the 15-day DL (ankle) and was optioned to Double-A Harrisburg.

Wang was in the middle of throwing a bullpen session before last nights game against the Giants when he stopped early due to discomfort in his hip. Davey Johnson immediately put Wang on the DL and notified his closer, Rodriguez, that he had been activated. Rodriguez was on his way out to dinner with his family when he found out.

Rodriguez was then called out of the bullpen in the ninth inning with 2 outs already in the books. The Nationals needed him to collect one out and they would go home with the 9-2 victory. "Hot-Rod", as is sometimes referred to as, struck out the final batter with a swinging strike three 100 MPH fastball.

Let's hope that Henry Rodriguez can continue that success. Before he went to the DL, he had lost his closer job to Tyler Clippard after making a habit of melting down worse than the end of the ice age on the mound.

Nationals catcher Sandy Leon has also been removed from the DL. After suffering an ankle sprain just four innings into his debut, Leon has been sidelined since mid-May. He will head to AA Harrisburg where he will provide catching depth.
